It’s the Journey, Not the Destination

Like many things in life, searching for a job can become an overwhelming task after a while. Piles of job descriptions, resumes and cover letters fill the space on my desk and the thoughts in my head.

Countless hours have been spent revising, refining, and attempting to perfect my cover letters and resume. For every job application, I have spent 2-3 hours researching the company, writing my letter and customizing my resume.

As the search has rolled on, and not every potential employer has contacted me, I’ve felt at times that the work I’ve done through each application process was a waste. Why would I spend so much time and effort when there was no return on my investment?

After a while, I realized that there was a return, if I only looked for it. With each revision came the chance to further define my experience, qualifications and skills. New connections and feedback from others have helped me evaluate and think about where I’ve been and where I want to go. With each possible position I have taken time to think about how my skills would be a “match”, and sometimes why it wouldn’t be a “match.”

In this process, I have also drafted a “master resume,” something that perhaps many have already thought about but certainly not me. When I looked at the things I have accomplished and learned over the years, I felt good about myself. My confidence was lifted. And so was my outlook.

The sky looks brighter and the sun somehow feels warmer now. And my search continues…
